If you are in a highly populated area, local or geographically targeted search engine marketing and advertising is a good way to go. This puts you right in front of people looking for your service. I am not sure where you are located but a little keyword research shows there are 15 searches per day for "hair salons in san diego", 19 searches per day for "hair salons in dallas texas", 12 searches per day for "beauty salon philadelphia" and the list goes on. If you are in a remote area outside a major metro area, you would have to find out what kind of search volume there is for your area.

You can reach the people searching for your services locally through localized web marketing programs such as local search engine optimization and local pay per click marketing. The most important thing is that your website is well optimized for the areas you serve. http://www.localrise.com is a good starting point to learn more about these types of local internet marketing programs.
References :
Word of mouth is the number 1 most powerful marketing tool for a business like yours.

But even word-of-mouth has a different level of intensity / impact. Example: Just asking people you know to spread the word of a new salon is not very effective if you didn't include a gimmick in your message.

I'm not sure what kind of gimmick would be good for a salon, but just to take a shot; something like "tell them that i'll be holding a contest for the youngest/oldest/most beatiful/etc patron each week, the prize is a 100$ hair tonic"

or...

"tell them that i'll give free hair treatment for twins"

Use your imagination, based on what you have. I would suggest giving away free prizes - it's a sure kill.
References :
every item can be marketed. its only a good choice by bands/groups to choose the best record label possible that is going to market the band to the fullest potential. in the short run getting the best points/royalties appeals to artists signing on indies. but the longrun of being marketed on a top level label is way more worth the good deals that indies offer their artists. marketing is everything people have to know about you to buy your work. then you can build your brand and when your contract expires you still have a big name to move elsewhere
References :
Unless you're referring to SEO marketing I recommend finding a reputable marketing firm. MA isn't something to be handled by a computer. too much emotion and understanding of people needed to find the perfect opportunities presented by the market.

An idea that can get you new clients while building up your name in the community AND get you free publicity on the local news.

You can organize a benefit for a local woman's shelter (the YWCA perhaps) For every regular client you will give one woman from the shelter a freebie. Give the regular client a discount as well. Create a one sheet press release and send it to the assignment editors at your local news stations and to the Human Interest or Editor at large at the paper. You could probably put this together in 2 weeks or so.

Another way to get together with a local designer or boutique to put on a charity fashion show. Same press release protocol as above. Your company name, address and a coupon can be in the program that every gives out (you can get these printed for free if you also include a local printer, get drinks and snacks free as well if you include a local caterer)

You could offer a limited free service for every wash and cut, like make up application or a manicure (basic stuff)

Best of luck

Just like any product out there (whether it be a car or toilet paper) there is a certain amount of branding and marketing companies must do in order to create a successful product. We live in such a visual world that it takes more and more to grab our attention as consumers, and to appeal to our psyche.

Music is no exception to this. I think it's very true that a lot of successful artists are successful because of successful marketing and branding ploys. However, when you think about it, a lot of these hot shot artists don't really have a lot of staying power. I highly doubt that in 20 years from now that a hit Ashlee Simpson record from 2004 is going to be highly sought after. But John Coltrane, Dave Matthews Band, Eric Clapton, and the Beatles? They are going to continue to sell records until the end of time. (I'm just using those artists as examples. There are many many others who are just as deserving.)

Yes, you are correct in that music has been highly commercialized, especially in recent years. Record labels and content holders are doing more and more to appeal to the consumer and snag a (usually temporary) stronghold on their corner of the industry. Eventually, however, that hold will most often times be shaken loose and those artists will quickly be ushered out and will just as quickly be replaced by the "next big thing."

True talent will shine through corporate financial backing. As superficial as the industry can be, I take comfort in the fact. Good music is good music, and while clever marketing can temporarily distract our visual sensibilities, commercial glitz can never fool a person's ear, or emotions.
References :
Music Business and Music Production/Engineering student at Berklee.

You should be salaried for your marketing expertise (at least $50,000 annually). I think you have the right idea about the commission. A fair increase or bonus on top of commissions would be to have either a quarterly or annual bonus based on the percentage you went over your expected goals. Maybe something like 6 - 10% of total earnings for the quarter should be your bonus.
References :
Marketing strategy should be fit with the kind of business you are running. If it is a micro, Small, Or big business. You should consider those things. But if you really determined to be known your salon, Try posting it in internet, by the way you can post it either on friendster or other website for free. or post some pamplets or posters. And if you know lots of people try encouraging them to promote your business.
